Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH)

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) is a serious and life-threatening condition in which there is a hole or defect in the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen. This defect allows abdominal organs such as the stomach, intestines, and liver to move into the chest cavity, which can compress the lungs and hinder their development. The lack of space in the chest prevents the lungs from growing properly, leading to breathing difficulties after birth. Immediate surgical intervention is often required to reposition the organs and repair the diaphragm.

Gastrointestinal Malformations

Gastrointestinal malformations are a group of congenital conditions that affect the digestive tract and require prompt surgical intervention. Some of the key conditions include:

• Esophageal Atresia: A condition where the esophagus (the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach) is not fully formed, leading to feeding difficulties and potential aspiration.
• Intestinal Atresia: A condition where parts of the intestines are narrowed or blocked, preventing the proper passage of food and nutrients.
• Anorectal Malformations: Abnormalities in the development of the anus and rectum, which can cause problems with bowel movements and require corrective surgery.

These conditions necessitate urgent surgical procedures to restore normal digestive function and ensure the baby’s survival and long-term health.

Neonatal Tumors

Neonatal tumors are growths that are present at birth and may be benign or malignant. Common types of neonatal tumors include:

• Teratomas: Tumors made up of different types of tissue, such as bone, hair, and muscle. They are usually benign but can become large and require surgical removal.
• Neuroblastomas: A type of cancer that arises from immature nerve cells and often affects the adrenal glands. Early detection and surgical removal are critical for improving outcomes.

Congenital Heart Defects

Congenital heart defects are structural problems with the heart that are present from birth. These defects can affect how blood flows through the heart and to the rest of the body. Examples include:

• Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD): A hole in the wall that separates the heart’s lower chambers.
• Tetralogy of Fallot: A combination of four heart defects that result in poor oxygenation of blood.

Neural Tube Defects

Neural tube defects are birth defects that occur when the neural tube, which forms the brain and spinal cord, does not close properly. One of the most common neural tube defects is:

• Spina Bifida: A condition where the spine and spinal cord do not form properly, leading to potential physical and neurological challenges.

Surgical treatment of neural tube defects, such as closing the spine in spina bifida cases, is crucial to prevent further complications, reduce the risk of infections, and improve the child’s quality of life.
